The science of certainty

What is ISO 17025 accreditation and why does it matter for emission measurements?

What is ISO 17025 accreditation?

ISO 17025 is an international standard that sets out general requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. Accreditation to ISO 17025 proves a laboratory has an acceptable quality management system in place, and that it has the ability and competence to provide reliable testing and calibration results.

An independent third party carries out the accreditation process. It verifies that techniques like sampling processes, testing procedures, and equipment maintenance and calibration comply with the standard.

Why use an ISO 17025 accredited lab for emission measurements?

Reliability. Any lab which holds the accreditation has demonstrated that their processes are scientifically robust and consistent, and that they have taken steps to mitigate risks that could harm results.

Emission measurement results delivered by an ISO 17025 accredited provider therefore provide certainty. What’s more, test reports are universally valid. They will be accepted by other labs and by regulatory authorities in different countries, without the need for further testing. For organisations operating in multiple countries, this is an important benefit.

Organisations that hold an ISO 17025 accredited lab report for their emission measurements will also have a clear audit trail that proves their data is accurate.

Is Aeromon ISO 17025 accredited?

Yes, Aeromon Ltd. is a testing laboratory (No. T362) accredited by FINAS Finnish Accreditation Service. Our emission measurement service – spanning leak detection, quantification, and flaring efficiency – is accredited to the ISO 17025 lab standard, while offering the added advantage of real-time data acquisition and same-day reporting.

What is Aeromon’s accredited process exactly?

We offer, and have pioneered, real-time mobile emission monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) as a service. Our BH-12 drone-assisted measuring device locates emission sources and measures compound concentrations.

The Aeromon Cloud Service (ACS) analytics platform quantifies emissions using using either Mass Balance or Reverse Dispersion Modelling, then delivers emissions reports with 3D data visualisation near-instantly, with no need to ship samples to a laboratory and wait days – or weeks – for results.

Do other emissions monitoring service providers hold this accreditation?

Not with comparable services. Aeromon is currently the only lab-accredited, global provider of site-level methane quantification and flaring efficiency analysis.

Why is this lab accreditation important for methane emission measurements in oil and gas?

ISO 17025 accreditation demonstrates that Aeromon’s emission measurements service delivers accurate, reliable, and trustworthy methane MRV results and that its leak detection, leak quantification and flaring efficiency surveys are acceptable to international governmental and regulatory authorities.

This is particularly valuable for oil and gas operators, producers and importers dealing with the EU, whose new 2024 Methane Regulation will soon introduce more stringent methane MRV requirements.

Aeromon has deep experience in helping oil and gas clients comply with OGMP 2 Level 5 reporting, which the new EU Methane Regulation’s MRV reporting will follow closely.

From January 2027, these new methane MRV standards will apply to EU oil, gas and coal imports; reports from the original producer or exporter must be consistent with emission measurements made in the EU.

Aeromon’s emission measurements are already consistent and comparable, even if surveys are carried out at different times in different territories. Since ISO 17025 is an international standard, accreditation enhances Aeromon’s ability to support global methane MRV programmes.

What are the implications for other industries like chemical and marine?

While methane detection is an urgent global challenge, our ISO 17025 accredited emissions monitoring service delivers the same measurement benefits – accuracy, reliability and scalability – to organisations seeking to detect and quantify many different airborne compounds. These include CH4, CO2, CO, NO, NO2, SO2, H2S and other non-methane Volatile Organic Compounds (NMVOCs).

Aeromon has over a decade of experience in mobile measurement of emissions across chemical, waste, maritime, mining and other industries. Our BH-12 device is able to simultaneously measure multiple compounds and particulate matter in real time.

We also already align with other globally-recognized reporting standards like CEN-EN 17628:2022 for VOC emissions.
